Burlingame's Efforts

The City of Burlingame has been concerned with the potential impacts of the High Speed Rail project and has been working diligently  to ensure that our concerns are properly mitigated. We have been proactive in dealing with High Speed Rail representatives through many meetings and public presentations. Below is a summary of activities that have been accomplished to date.

 November 2008

   California voters approved the High Speed Rail project
January 22, 2009    City sent letter to High Speed Rail with initial comments indicating concerns

February 17, 2009   City Council invited the High Speed Rail Authority to present the project scoping and to express community concerns

April 3, 2009

  Mayor sent letter to High Speed Rail Authority with City’s concerns and revised comments

May 4, 2009   City Council invited High Speed Rail Authority to provide project update and to obtain community input

June 2, 2009   City staff met with High Speed Rail staff to advocate for City concerns and to comment on Public Outreach Program by the Authority

June 15, 2009

  City Council formally joined the Peninsula Cities Consortium and appointed Council members and alternates to remain informed of High Speed Rail issues and to advocate for City’s concerns

June 23, 2009   City staff attended the first High Speed Rail Technical Working Group meeting in San Carlos

August 17, 2009   High Speed Rail staff presented the Public Outreach Program to the City Council for their review and comment

September 26, 2009   Town Hall meeting for community to review the project with State Senator Leland Yee and State Assemblyman Jerry Hill representatives

September 30, 2009   City staff attended the second High Speed Rail Technical Working Group meeting in San Carlos

October 3 & 4, 2009   Council and Staff attended the High Speed Rail Workshop in Palo Alto

October 15, 2009   Council representatives attended the first High Speed Rail Policy Working Group meeting in San Carlos

November 16, 2009   Council and staff participated in the Context Sensitive Solutions workshop for public input on the High Speed Rail project

December 2009   High Speed Rail Draft Business Plan released for public review and Council update

January 19, 2010   Council representative attends California Assembly Transportation Committee Hearing on High Speed Rail Authority Business Plan

Mayor sent letter to Peninsula Rail Program with comments on CSS workshops and presentation
January 21, 2010   Council representatives and staff attend State Senate Informational Hearing on High Speed Rail in Palo Alto.

March 23, 2010   City staff attended High Speed Rail Technical Working Group meeting

March 15, 2010   City staff presented High Speed Rail Alternatives and Council discussed action plan for future activities

April 19, 2010   Council reviews recently released Preliminary Alternatives Analysis for High Speed Rail

May 2010   City hires Engineering consultant to review High Speed Rail Alternatives

May 12, 2010   Council and staff representatives met with Rod Diridon, High Speed Rail Authority Board member, to present the concerns and tour the rail corridor.

May 12, 2010   City sponsored public workshop on High Speed Rail Alternatives held at the Recreation Center.

June 21, 2010   Council reviews comments on Preliminary Alternatives Analysis.
June 25, 2010   City Council sends letter with comments on the Preliminary Alternatives Analysis to High Speed Rail Authority.

June 29, 2010   Staff meets with Peninsula Rail Program representatives to review the engineering design for the Preliminary Alternatives.

July 19, 2010   Council and staff meet with Fiona Ma, Assemblywoman to discuss city concerns and tour the rail corridor.

August 17, 2010   Mayor’s letter to the Federal Rail Administration (FRA) and federal officials on the funding application by the California High Speed Rail Authority for future financing of the rail line through the Peninsula

August 26, 2010   Mayor’s letter to the Chief Executive Officer of the California High Speed Rail Authority on the Supplemental Alternatives Analysis report and funding request to the FRA

August 31, 2010   Mayor’s letter to California High Speed Rail Authority on the Revised Final Program EIR for the Bay Area to Central Valley High Speed Train

September 23, 2010   City staff letter to Peninsula Rail Program with comments on Supplemental Alternatives Analysis corrections.

October 11, 2010   Tri-Cities letters to Congresswomen Anna Eshoo and Jackie Speier on preferred alternative and funding

October 14, 2010   Story Poles unveiled with press release at the Burlingame Avenue Train Station to depict the elevations for the high speed rail aerial viaduct alternative

  • Mail meeting notices to over 2,000 residents
  • Send notification on High Speed Rail meetings to 5,500 City eNews subscribers
