The City of Burlingame contracts with Recology San Mateo County for residential and commercial solid waste pickup.

Current Recology Rates for Curbside Pickup (effective January 1, 2024)
The garbage rates cover the costs for the following items, in most cases:

  • Weekly garbage, recycling, and compost collection
  • Curbside used battery & cell phone recycling
  • Curbside used motor oil & oil filter recycling
  • Twice annual bulky item collection
  • Disposal fees at the landfill
  • Processing fees for recycling
  • Processing fees for composting
  • Street sweeping
  • County and local fees
  • Household hazardous waste fees
  • Public receptacle cleaning


The new rate is effective as of January 1, 2024. Monthly Solid Waste Rates are effective on the 1st of each calendar year. Basic monthly residential and commercial rates for curbside pickup are as follows:

RethinkWaste Recycling Programs and the Shoreway Environmental Center
The Shoreway Environmental Center is operated by South Bay Recycling and owned by Rethink Waste, a joint powers authority with 12 member agencies (the cities of Belmont, Burlingame, East Palo Alto, Foster City, Menlo Park, Redwood City, San Carlos, San Mateo, Atherton, Hillsborough, the County of San Mateo, and West Bay Sanitary District).

Household Hazardous Waste Programs

The Rethink Waste At-Your-Door HHW (Household Hazardous Waste) Program expired on December 31, 2016. However, the County's HHW Program is available to all San Mateo County residents. Visit the San Mateo County Department of Environmental Health at smchealth.org/hhw or 650-372-6202 to find out about their safe, convenient and free disposal options. The public recycling center at Shoreway also accepts some Household Hazardous Waste.

The San Mateo County of Environmental Health also (separately) provides a similar service. Please contact (650) 655-6202 for additional details.

Free Compost for Residents 
Residents can receive free compost year-round at the Shoreway Environmental Center.
