Ancestry has made a portion of their records freely available to anyone, anywhere. Ancestry has digitized and made searchable more than half a million records related to the Chinese Exclusion Era. During this 60-year period in the U.S. and Canada, laws were enacted to restrict immigration and rights of people of Chinese descent. Many of these Exclusion Era records contain photos and rich details about family relationships that can help descendants learn more about their ancestors’ experiences. The California State Library is providing public libraries with free online access to the New York Times (NYT).  You can access the NYT on Internet computers in libraries or get 24-hour offsite access through our website by code activation.

Getting Started

Access on library computers:

  1. Go to the New York Times
  2.  “Sign Up” to create an account with your personal email address, or log in if you have already created an account.
  3. Click through 11+ articles during your session to ensure you do not hit the NYT pay wall.

Offsite/remote access

  1. Open a web browser.
  2. Click on the remote access link.
  3. *Click “Redeem” to get 24 hours of continuous access.
  4. **Register with your personal email address, or click on “log in here” if you have already created an account.

Once you have created your account (or have logged in), you will receive an email confirmation of your 72-hour, unlimited access to New York Times Digital.

* After the first 24 hours have passed, you will need to redeem another code for another 24 hours of remote access (i.e. Repeat Step 2). This is the licensing model that New York Times has negotiated with public libraries.

**
Please be advised that registering an email address with New York Times Digital will opt you into receiving email marketing communications from the New York Times. To opt out of receiving mailings, follow the unsubscribe instructions at the bottom of these messages.

Using New York Times Digital App

The New York Times Digital app is free and available for the following operating systems:

  • Android
  • iOS
  • Fire tablets

Please visit your device's app store to get the app. You will need to follow the "Offsite/remote access" instructions above to access New York Times Digital on the app.

If you're using a mobile device, open your device’s browser to the New York Times page with the remote access link to get the access code, not the New York Times app itself. Then, once you launch the NYT app and sign in with the email address you used to register, the code will have already been applied.

In previous years, the Burlingame Public Library has ordered and stocked a supply of paper Tax Forms and Instruction booklets. Over the past few years, it has become increasingly difficult to get these forms in a timely manner and we are unable to provide them when the demand is at its highest.  In order to reduce waste, we have made the decision to not stock paper forms or instruction booklets this year, but both the IRS and the CA Franchise Tax Board have made it easy for anyone to order Forms and Booklets for free and have them mailed directly to their address.
